TiVo Home Media Option

TiVo Home Media Option

It works! It wasn’t supposed to be that easy but it really was. I have been the proud owner of a TiVo for going on nearly 2 years. However I have never been able to take advantage of the mysterious “Music and Photo” option that has been taunting me on TiVo Central for so long. I wish I could say it was because I didn’t have a home network but not only do I have one, it’s wireless. Anyway, about 6 months ago, I attempted to connect my TiVo box using an unnamed wireless adapter that just simply failed to deliver. No matter what I tried, my TiVo just couldn’t see my network. It’s funny, but during that failed connection attempt I started to remember what it was like to be a frustrated Windows user always thinking, “Why won’t this *$@%ing thing work?” Regardless, for whatever reason, the TiVo gods didn’t want me to peak to early in my career as a DVR owner by having everything working right away. Forlorn of all hope, I gave up.

Fast forward 6 months. Monday night I thought I’d give it another go and dragged myself to Best Buy after work to use the $25 gift card I got for Christmas. As I combed the aisles looking for what I needed I placed a call to Mighty Dave for verification of specs offered up by TiVo on their Web site. Long story short – I spent more time in looking for what I needed to buy than I did getting it to work. Here are the cast of characters that contributed to my renewed love of TiVo:

  1. TiVo Series2 DVR
  2. D-Link DWL – 122 Wireless USB Adapter
  3. AirPort Extreme
  4. 14 inch iBook
  5. TiVo Desktop for Mac v1.8

I know this isn’t a new technological breakthrough and this option has been around for awhile, but in hopes of inspiring others who had trouble with this option I felt compelled share my success story.
